CSA Pick up number 1

Ok this is off topic and not business related but here we go.

I am this summer 2011 participating in a Fruit CSA(Consumer Supported Agriculture) with G and S Orchards.

I purchased 1/2 a share I felt a full share would be way to much for my home considering the picky eaters I have. I am also a big fruit eater so this was perfect.

This weeks take home was 2 quarts of strawberries and 1lbs of rhubarb(I promise next week pictures)

So what I did yesterday was brought my lovely bag of fruit home washed it up and tried this wonderful recipe that they passed on to us: I am eating mine with no cream on it and it is just wonderful.

Strawberry Rhubarb with Lots of Crisp
(From the kitchen of Autumn Kirker)

Fruit Filling - note this recipe is flexible enough for you to change the amounts of Rhubarb and Strawberries just make sure the fruit equals 6 cups in total. Be sure to adjust the sugar accordingly.

Rhubarb washed and cut into 1/2” pieces - 4 cups
Strawberries washed and sliced - 2 cups
Sugar - 3/4 of a cup
All Purpose Flour - 3 Tablespoons

Mix the above ingredients together and place in an ungreased 9 x 11 glass baking dish.

Crisp Topping

Rolled Oats - 1 cup
Light Brown Sugar - 1 cup
All Purpose Flour - 1/2 cup
Cinnamon OR Nutmeg OR Clove – 1/2 Teaspoon
(Select only one of the spices based on your personal preference do not use all three).
Softened Butter - 1/2 cup

Mix all of the dry ingredients together. Cut the butter into the mixed dry ingredients. Sprinkle this mixture over the fruit filling.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in a pre - heated oven at 375 degrees.
Serve warm or cold as is or with whipped cream, ice cream or heavy cream. Yummy!

Shipping/Packaging update

In an effort to not raise my shipping costs to you I am changing a few things:

I will no longer be wrapping my diapers in tissue paper. I know it is nice to feel like you are receiving a gift but this saves on money and waste.
I am no longer printing and paying for delivery confirmation on just First Class Mail packages (all other packages will still have delivery confirmation). This saves some money; also I am able to use smaller labels to save on waste; and usually first class packages do not get scanned as regularly as Priority Mail and Parcel Post Packages do.

If you think you need delivery confirmation on 1 diaper please express that in your comments with your order. This change only affect orders of usually just 1 diaper or a small order of newborn diapers.

FYI: I send with all my packages a Thank You card and I am starting to include wash instructions with it. Oh yeah, do not forget that there is a return customer coupon in there as well.

New Micro Fiber Towels

I have not updated the shops with this yet but I will be soon. I had to change supplier for the micro-fiber towels I use as and insert for my Nykibaby Pocket One Size Pocket Diapers

These towels in my opinion are not as thick and not the same size. What I am doing is sewing 2 of them together. Remember these are free with diaper, and besides, if you do not like this form of diaper insert it always makes a nice cleaning rag.

They are 14 inch by 14 inch and 2 layers thick. 1 white and 1 blue.

Ok so here is quick show and tell about Very Baby and Sugar Plum Baby Newborn Diapers differences:

Very Baby:

I would recommend for smaller to normal size babies and these will fit up to about 12lbs.
Elastic in the tummy area
narrower crotch
A little more in price

Sugar Plum Baby:

I would recommend for normal to chubbier babies. 7lbs up to 12lbs
Flat tummy panel
slightly larger rise then Very Baby
lower in price because I own this pattern

I hope this helps when trying to pick one of my newborn diapers. They are not the same pattern and one diaper is designed for the larger size babies like my son was. LOL I do sew then the same way as far as sergering, elastic, and fabric layers go however.

So here is the plan. After all the group buy orders are done I will be:

making Very Baby Newborn diapers in all the prints we have for custom orders. It has been suggested and I only think it is fair that you see a representation of the diaper print. All of these that will be stocked are going to be made in Cotton Sherpa and lined in Cotton velour. I will not be stocking cotton velour once it is gone just bamboo velour.
I will be adding custom orders for Sugar Plum Baby and making all the newborn diapers to picture the prints.
Sugar Plum Baby Newborn 6 Pack diapers will only be offered in 6 great colors. Baby Blue, Baby Pink, Purple, Jade Green, Rainbow, and Spring Green.(Once I have the Pictures for all of these I will make the change.)

Ok I am in the middle of sewing Nykibaby One Size Pocket Diapers and Very Baby One Size Pocket Diapers. All of these diapers are made of poly print pul. These will be fun for summer time fun. I have 14 cut out. I am shooting for Thursday June 17th to stock these diapers.

Next on the list is Hemp Plum Night diapers. My plans are to make 6 of these and then open custom orders up for them. I have received a shipment of Micro Chamois(Micro Fleece) this stuff is super soft and suppose to be pill resistant according to the manufacturer. I will have 3 colors white, lime, and periwinkle(but this is more of a dark lavender and matches my lavender snaps).

I am planning to have single diapers, and 3 packs available for made to order/custom order diapers. 3 Packs will be $59 and single diapers price depends on size: Small $20.95; Medium $22.95; Large $24.95; X-Large $28.95

The third thing I am planning on working on over the summer is more Very baby One Sized fitted diapers and Sugar Plum Baby sized fitted diapers. I will be focusing on making them out of cotton sherpa and lining them out of bamboo velour and cotton velour using some cute knit prints I have that are not part of my custom orders. These are diaper cuts and limited quantity, so you could say they will be limited edition prints.

Yeah I am excited things have been going well sewing wise this week with the Sugar Plum Baby diapers.

Next weeks stocking will be new Newborns and Smalls. These cute yummy diapers are all bamboo fleece/ bamboo velour lined. You will love how they feel on your little one. I also had some fun matching colors. Previews will be up soon and they will be available for sale on Monday March 22, 2010.

I know I have been quiet but that is because I was enjoying family time and getting year end paper work done. Which, by the way, now I can get even more diapers sewn. Here is our very first Cotton Sherpa Very Baby Diaper Review

How does the diaper fit your little one? It fit very well. When I first received it I thought it was going to be very bulky with the larger soaker, but I was impressed on how trim it turned out to be.

Did you use the cross over snaps?(I ask this because I believe on skinnier babies the hip snaps maybe less effective) I did

Did you find that the extra wing snap(hip snap) helpful in keeping the diaper from drooping less? No, but I have a skinny-ish baby and had to use the cross-over snaps to make the diaper as skinny as possible most of the time.

What snap down setting did you use? Small, Medium or Large
Were you able to use the snaps with very little trouble? No trouble at all. The sizing ones did unsnap a few times when my daughter kept moving as I was trying to put it on.

Does the Sherpa work well enough for a Day Time Diaper? Very well even without any soaker. I had to use the medium setting for my daughter and used just the diaper, med soaker and larger soaker and all worked very well (I also did not use a cover on the diaper as it held everything so well and I am in the midst of potty training)

Were you able to figure out the soaker pads well enough? Very easy, though folding over the larger one to fit in the medium setting takes some times when the baby won't cooperate.
Do you think I should add 1 more layer to the soaker pad? No, I think it is fine as it is.

Do you think I should shorten the larger soaker pad? No, I can see the advantage of that large of a soaker for larger babies.

How was the dry time on this diaper? Not any different than the other types of diapers that I use.

How well did this diaper fit with the covers you used? When I first used the diaper I used a wool diaper cover and it worked great, but after it not soaking through quickly I didn't bother with a cover.
Any other concerns or observations you have about the diaper? I have heard several negative comments about one size diapers: the sizing buttons don't really work, the bulk it makes in the front is not good, since it is one size the leg holes don't fit as well. I will say that I had none of these problems. My daughter has skinny legs and she didn't have any problems with. To give people an idea of her size she a very active (loves running) nearly 16 month old girl that is 19lbs 11 oz with cloth diaper and around 31" tall. And this diaper stayed on her very well. Many of her diapers begin to inch downward as she climbs and runs but this one did not! Very well made.

The Diaper that was tested was one of my cotton sherpa Pink Faerie Very Baby One Size Diapers.

We are having our grand re-open Monday February 22 2010!

How does the diaper fit your little one? My son will be three next week, and he weighs 33 pounds. The diaper fit him perfectly.
Did you use the cross over snaps?(I ask this because I believe on skinnier babies the hip snaps maybe less effective) I did not use the crossover snaps.
Did you find that the extra wing snap(hip snap) helpful in keeping the diaper from drooping less? I do think that the extra hip snap helped keep the diaper from drooping.
Were you able to use the snaps with very little trouble?(one of my concerns is adding more snaps for a better fit might make it more confusing) I don't think the extra snaps were confusing, this isn't the first snap diaper I've used, and it's no more easy or confusing than any other snap diaper.
Any other concerns or observations you have about the diaper? I really, really like this diaper. My son is very verbal, and when we put it on at bedtime (with the extra soaker, and under wool longies), he said, "This is the softest nicey diaper ever!" Any diaper that's not a prefold is a nicey diaper in his book. And in the morning, when I took it off him, he kept telling me how soft the diaper was even though it had lots of pee in it. Henry does not like using cloth overnight, and he LOVES your diaper.

Here is feedback from our Medium Grape Crush diaper tester:

How does the diaper fit your little one? It fit her well, although for some reason I could not get the right thigh as tight as the left one. The elastic seemed to be the same length though. IMO, I think the leg elastic could stand to be an inch longer to provide a more snug fit all around the thigh.

Did you find that the extra wing snap(hip snap) helpful in keeping the diaper from drooping less? YES, I didn't notice any droop, which is usually a HUGE issue for us!

Here is feedback from our Large Sour Apple diaper tester:

How does the diaper fit your little one? It fits her very, very well. It is very generously sized, and I can see that she will be able to wear it until potty training with no problem. That is a big plus for us as we are on somewhat of a budget. I know you said you were using a different fabric on the testers, so I don't know if that would make a difference or not. I love the rise on it as well. I am personally not a fan of the bikini or low-cut rise on dipes. It really fits her perfectly.
Did you use the cross over snaps?(I ask this because I believe on skinnier babies the hip snaps maybe less effective) Yes, and it is the first time we have used the cross over snaps. I only used the first cross over snap on the diaper, but I found it easy to use and it truly ensures a great fit for her.
Did you find that the extra wing snap(hip snap) helpful in keeping the diaper from drooping less? Yes. We do not have any droopage at all, and I love the extra snap again to keep the diaper snug.

I was only surprised that it fit big enough for us to use the cross over so that was new to us. Aside from that, I think the snaps are very easy to use and figure out.
Any other concerns or observations you have about the diaper? I really only have good things to say. It really is a lovely diaper, and I am very happy with the fit on her. I have asked her if she likes the diaper and she does. Again, I really like the fact that it will fit for a long time. It is so precious on, and fits just perfectly. If I had to say anything about it that would be not a perfect fit for her it would be the width of the crotch, but that seems the same with every diaper we have so not a negative. Overall, I am very pleased with the diaper and would definitely purchase more and recommend others to do the same.

I guess I really should have asked him what he thought of them and seen if he had any problems. Unfortunately, he's out of town for the week right now at work so I can't get him to weigh in right now. He did say it seemed like a very nice diaper just based on looks.

Any other concerns or observations you have about the diaper? I think it's the nicest diaper in my stash now! We mostly use Rita's Rump Pockets that I've sewn myself. We've got a few snap pocket diapers and I've tried my hand at a few fitted diapers but can't seem to get them absorbent enough on their own. I think if more people could see and use cloth diapers like this, a lot more people would choose cloth when they realize how far cloth diapers have come since just flat folds or prefolds.

Great Diaper, I really liked it and cannot wait to try the one size when they are ready....

How does the diaper fit your little one? I have washed the diaper and used it twice now on my 6 month old daughter. I really like how if fits around her chunky legs. It doesn't leave any marks at all.

Did you find that the extra wing snap(hip snap) helpful in keeping the diaper from drooping less? I think the hip snaps are great to a get a great fit and help hold in breastfed baby messes. I think the leg openings would be to loose without them.

It wasn't a big issue it is just how it worked out with her right now.

Here is the Feed back I received on Medium Sour Apple Tester #1 :

Very well, the diaper is super cute and he seems very comfortable in it. I think the mediums will probably fit a much larger baby. I say this because I do not have a skinny child at all, he is pretty solid and is right at 25 pounds and while we didn't use the crossover snaps we used up to right before the two most middle snaps. So we probably have a few more pounds in this diaper at this height, and since he'll be growing upwards also I would bet this diaper will fit for months more. But I guess a much younger baby at the same weight would probably have the 25lbs as right at the limit.

Very Baby One Size Cloth Diapers

Susan is not new to sewing Very Baby Diapers and has been sewing them off on since 2005. The Very Baby One size diaper was released in 2009 and has had extensive testing done by other Very Baby WAHM's, but this is the first time Susan has sewn these diapers.

Susan will, before Thanksgiving, have 4 Testers available just for some general feed back. All of the testers are made out of Cotton Sherpa(90% Cotton 10% Poly) the Sherpa that Susan is using is nice thick soft stuff. The fabric weighs 17ozs per yard.

These diapers will fit most babies from 12lbs to 35lbs +
Rise is 13 inch to 18 inch
12 inch to 23 inch waist

You will find these diapers have 3 rise settings to grow with the baby. 3 Wing snaps, on each wing, to help with the wing droop and cross over snaps to get a nice snug fit in your little one's waist.

There is a small quick dry soaker and a large quick dry soaker for each diaper. The small soaker can be used for both the small and medium settings to help keep them trim. The large soaker can be used on the medium setting but you will need to fold it down to fit the diaper. This adds absorbency but will make the diaper a little bit more bulky over using the small soaker with the medium setting. Of course the larger soaker is a prefect fit for the large rise setting and a little hint: on the Large setting you can lay in the small soaker to use as a doubler when needed.

Susan will be sewing up 4 Very Baby One Size Diaper testers next. The cotton sherpa is in being washed and will be cut into tonight. Pictures coming soon.

Out cotton sherpa is nice soft stuff. This cotton poly knit blend is fuzzy on 1 side and smooth on another. (90%cotton/10%Poly) Knit fabric need a little polyester in them to hold their shape other wise these fabrics would fall apart. Cotton sherpa is our most affordable fabric and is a great all around fabric to use in diapers.

All testers will have cute prints as well.

Non Diaper Post: Armature #2 "Jack"

Ok here is the second prop I built for Mark's Haunted Garage and I call him Jack. Yes I carved a Funkin and then glued it to a piece of PVC to use as a head and this time I used the chicken wire to fill out the belly and my husband was impressed. LOL

I made this PVC Armature Prop with out help from my husband. I even ventured to Loews and bought the parts I needed. If I can make this anyone can. I am only so so with the power tools but I am proud of my work and I am driving Mark crazy wanting to build more I think.

I call him Gas Mask Dude and of course I got teased for not putting chicken wire on him to fill him out.

Ok Ok, the not so good stuff first. We as WAHM"S and consumers have been somewhat mislead. There has always been some confusion with bamboo fabrics and now the Federal Trade Commission has issued statements about these fabric and how we need to label them. I always order my fabric from reputable coops and they have provided proof the fabrics are indeed "Rayon made of Bamboo". I will not use terms like organic or green when listing the "Rayon made of Bamboo". Rayon is a man made fabric that is made from the cellulose of plants and trees. The process involved in making the fabric is toxic and not very green.

We will still continue to use the Rayon made of bamboo/cotton blend fleece and velour. There is no denying the fact that this fabric is excellent diaper fabric but not a green fabric like cottons and hemps are.

Right now Susan has a roll of 90/10 Cotton Poly Sherpa Blend that she will be using on One Size Very Baby diapers and regular Sugar Plum Baby Diapers.

We do plan to in the spring to get an order of Hemp/Organic Cotton blend fleece to use to make night time diapers and regular Sugar Plum Baby Diapers. Hemp/Organic Cotton is certainly a green fabric.

100% Poly Micro-Fleece will be used in night time diapers and to top soaker pads in the sherpa diapers for wicking.

From time to time we will have Cotton/Poly Blend Velours to use with the hemp in regular Sugar Plum Baby Diapers.

Hi All

Yes I am trying to squeeze in a few more diapers this week before I need to focus on cleaning my house and getting ready for Spooktackular on Friday 23 and Halloween on Saturday the 31st.

Currently I have 3 more medium Sugar Plum Baby diapers to sew and 1 large. I will have 8 total diapers ready to go in November for testers on my new snap layout. I will be having these available for lottery but there will be restrictions the 3 I can think of right now is:

Your baby needs to be able to test the diaper now because I need the feed back I want to roll these out in January if possible for sale. So please do not add your name to the lottery unless your little one can use the diaper.
Only 1 free diaper per house hold for the testing
No International shipping on these sorry, I will not be charging anything for these diapers including shipping so I need to keep costs down.

My goal is to have these ready for lottery the beginning of November and the lottery will be available for 5 days at our Hyena Cart Store.

Susan will be specializing in fitted cloth diapers. Fitted cloth diapers were a favorite of Susan's. They were the best type of diapers that fitted her son and also the most absorbent. Allen was a power soak-er and struggled with AIO's

What is a fitted cloth diaper?

Fitted Cloth Diapers are shaped like disposables and usually you fasten them with snaps or Velcro and there is elastic at least in the leg areas to contain the mess. Fitted cloth diapers are not water proof you will need a diaper cover for them but typically they are usually a little more absorbent then AIO's and dry a little fast because of no water proof barrier to slow the dry times.
